Political Career --- Prof.Vijay kumar Malhotra



Professor Vijay Kumar Malhotra has had a long and exemplary political career. He enjoyed being involved in public service since he was just a teenager. At the age of 14, he used to leave his home and help the needy, returning home late at night getting reprimanded from an exasperated mother, who used to wait to give him dinner. She finally reconciled to the fact that this second eldest of her seven children would follow his heart and enter public life. He started his political career as a student leader and went on to join the Bhartiya Jan Sangh ( now Bhartiya Janta Party ), becoming its Secretary at the age of 20.

1958

Elected Member of the Delhi Municipal Corporation from Patel Nagar seat, New Delhi.

Ensured a planned development of his constituency making Patel Nagar a clean and green locality of beautiful parks, lakes, community centers, well-located markets and other amenities.

1962

Again elected Member of the Delhi Municipal Corporation from Patel Nagar seat, New Delhi, due to a satisfied and happy electorate.

1967-1972

Elected Member of the Delhi Metropolitan Council (equivalent to current Legislative Assembly).

Youngest Chief Executive Councilor (CEC, CM in Protocol) of Delhi at the age of 35 years.

Served as CEC in the Metropolitan Council of Delhi for a full term of five years. This era is known as the ‘Golden Era’ in Delhi, as it saw the maximum development work take place, making Delhi a role-model of infrastructure for other cities in India.

1972

Again elected Member of the Delhi Metropolitan Council.

Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Metropolitan Council.

Chairman, Assurances Committee of the Delhi Metropolitan Council.

1975-1977

Arrested during the despotic Emergency imposed by Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

Detained and kept under severe persecution for 19 months in jails in Delhi, Ambala, Chandigarh and Hissar.

Fell seriously ill because of those privations and tribulations and had to be admitted in the PGI Medical Institute, Chandigarh for 10 months. In PGI, Chandigarh, he was kept in solitary confinement in a whole ward meant for 100 patients, and went through severe mental trauma.

1977

Elected to the 6th Lok Sabha from South Delhi, as a candidate of the newly formed Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). BJP formed a coalition government at the center with other political parties under the banner of Janata party.

1977-1980

Member of the Committee on Public Accounts in Lok Sabha.

Elected President of the Janata Party, Delhi.

1980-84

Nominated President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Delhi.

National Secretary, BJP from 1983 to 1990.

1989-91

In the year 2000, he was made Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs.

During 2002-2004 he was President of the All India Council of Sports with the rank of Cabinet Minister of the Union government.

2004

Elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from South Delhi, which is his 4th term as a Lok Sabha Member.

Out of 7 seats in Delhi, his was the only seat won by the BJP, due to the tremendous amount of work done by him in the constituency, and his being in touch with the common man amongst his electorate.
